There is no greater LOVE than the love GOD has for each and every one of us. As I often reflect on the many blessings God has bestowed upon me and my family, I have come to realize that most of the time, He has done so through connecting me with individuals with disabilities.
Since 1983, I have worked with individuals with disabilities in various departments of Catholic Social Services, from direct care, teaching, case management and now as a Program Coordinator for the Life Sharing through Family Living Program. These special folks have made me who I am today. Patience, kindness, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness, respect and LOVE are just a few of the virtues that they have taught me. As Jean Vanier states, “To LOVE someone is to show them their beauty, their worth and their importance.” In other words, all people regardless of their abilities or disabilities want to feel LOVED. I have discovered in my everyday relationships with my special friends that GOD comes to us through one another, teaching each of us how to LOVE unconditionally, with acceptance of all and without judgment.
I also witness God’s unconditional Love each and every day in our Life Sharing Program through the example of our dedicated and devoted providers as they welcome individuals who were once complete strangers not only into their homes, but into their hearts and families. They totally embrace these special folks with unconditional LOVE and full acceptance.
My family and I also participate as providers in the Life Sharing Program. We were abundantly blessed the day God brought Kellie to us. The LOVE and Joy we experience everyday with her is immeasurable. As Jean Vanier warns us, “If you are in relationship with them, they will change you.” This could not be more true – I am someone who has been changed for the better because of God’s gift of people with disabilities in my life. And for that, I am so very thankful.
